Systems thinking is a competency needed in today’s information-based and complex world. Just as objects interact during physics experiments, people interact in the lab setting, too.

Hieronymi maps the integration of five system categories with five knowledge dimensions as an approach to systems thinking in science. Within that integration, he proposes 11 hierarchical systems characteristics to guide evaluation of the system.

In this assignment, you will describe an instructional setting as a system, and utilize Hieronymi’s 11 hierarchical systems characteristics to evaluate the function of the instructional setting system.

  • Create a paper in a Word document for your response.
  • Use APA format for the paper, title page, references page, and in-text citations.
  • Develop an introduction and conclusion for your paper.

Step 1. Define
Define your system to be either the overall instructional setting that includes the set of all your students or the instructional setting that includes the set of students in one class. You may decide whether or not to include other objects in the environment of your classroom in your system.

Step 2. Access
Access or download the article by Andreas Hieronymi from the link on the Learning Objects page. Printing is not recommended because the article is lengthy. You will not need to read the entire article, just the parts designated in the steps below.

Step 3. Study
Study Figures 3, 5, 7, and 8 in “Understanding Systems Science…” by Andreas Hieronymi. These figures will help you think of your teaching environment as a system.
