Cypress College Black Market Organs Problem Cause and Solution Discussion

Cypress College Black Market Organs Problem Cause and Solution Discussion

Question Description

Persuasive speech formats:

For the persuasive speech, odds are that you will employ one of the following body structures: 1) Problem/Cause/Solution or 2) Monroe’s motivated sequence. Both of these patterns are in the book, but for your last speech of the class, I would advise looking to the following rubrics:

1) Problem-Cause-Solution. This format can also be employed as a Cause-Problem-Solution framework if it fits the logic of your topic better.

I. Introduction. This is pretty much the same framework that we have used so far of an attention-grabber, audience analysis, credibility, and a thesis statement that previews the areas of your speech.

A. Attention Grabber—You should still start your speech with some kind of hook, whether it be a joke, story, quotation, question, etc. (How many of you poop and text? It’s disgusting!—LOL!)

B. Audience Analysis—You should try and find some polling data about your topic. If you have picked a good controversial topic, you should be able to find some statistics about how contemporary society feels about the issue. Opposing viewpoints should have this data, but the big polling companies like Gallup and Pew should have a statistical breakdown of American views on a host of issues. In the end, you should have a statement like “48% of Americans are pro-_____.”

C. Credibility—You should still establish your credibility with one of your best authors here. Please remember to tell us the Author, Qualification, Article, and Date before you begin quoting the source. i.e. “According to the New Zealand Herald in 2014, ‘The researchers, from the University of Oregon, sampled the hands and phones of 17 people for 7000 different naturally occurring microbes commonly found on our bodies. They found that 82 percent of the dominant microbes on their hands were also found on their phones, and the collections matched their own personal microbiome, or the community of bacteria regularly carried by a person. Microbiologically, women were found to be more closely connected to their phones than men.”

D. Thesis/Preview—The last part of your introduction should preview the TOPIC and the PROBLEM, THE CAUSE, and THE SOLUTION. For example: In order to stop the horrible transmission of pathogens, I am here to tell you that you should stop texting on the toilet because: 1) There are bad diseases in the bathroom, 2) Cypress college students spread disease by texting on the toilet, and 3) If we kill off all students who watch videos while pooping, we can save the campus.

II. The Body (Problem, Cause, Solution).

A. Topic Sentence describing the Problem—Give us a short claim about how the world is problematic because of your topic area, e.g. “You are all using your phones on the toilet, and you are going to die.”

B. Here you should try to include statistics, facts, maybe even a story or short anecdote that justifies your claim.

C.(Remember that throughout your body points you should include speaking cues and references to your slides).

D.*Transition—Now that we have discussed the problem, let us turn to… e.g. “Know that you know the toilet transfers germs to your cell phone, you understand the cause of this epidemic…”

III. The Body (the Cause).

A. Topic Sentence describing the Cause—There is some shortfall in human nature that is causing the problem, describe it here.

B. Here you should try to include statistics, facts, maybe even a story or short anecdote that justifies your claim.

C.(Remember that throughout your body points you should include speaking cues and references to your slides).

D.*Transition—Now that we have discussed the cause, let us turn to… e.g. “Know that you know you have toilet germs from your cell phone use, you can learn how to stop it by…”

IV. The Body (The Solution).

A. Topic Sentence describing the Solution—There is a way that you can remedy the ills of our actions.

1.Personally—You can take a particular action to stop the problem (stop texting on the toilet!)

2.Socially—Start a community group, a club, or join a non-profit organization (all the other people that join in on not texting while on the toilet!)

3.Politically—Find a local political group that is against your problem or are for your cause (join Bernie or Trump when they say “stop texting on the toilet!”)

B.(Optional) Here you should try to include statistics, facts, maybe even a story or short anecdote that justifies your claim that the solutions will work.

C.(Remember that throughout your body points you should include speaking cues and references to your slides).

V. The Conclusion.

A. Restate your main points (“Today we talked about the problem, the cause, and the solution.”)

B. Try to end on a powerful note, whether it be quotation, anecdote, or statistic…
