What has been the impact of trade with China on employment in the United States, in the manufacturing sector and more broadly? How widespread is this impactis it highly localized, or has it affected broad regions and sectors of the U.S. economy?
The two main readings for this question are the ones by Autor, Dorn, and Hanson (2016) and Scott (2020) ; and you are welcome to find (and cite) other sources but you must discuss the Autor et al. and Scott readings. As best as you can, try to explain and critically evaluate the methodologies the authors use to identify this impact, and evaluate which estimates you think are most reliable and why. [Note this is not a question about Trumps trade war with China, which will be covered in the second set of blogs (later in the semester). This question is about the earlier impact of Chinas rise in the global economy on the US labor market.]
