It is difficult to obtain an educated understanding of, and appreciation for, the art of poetry (or much of Rap or Hip-Hop) without some familiarity with the science of poetic meter. Please read the material on Poetic Meter and Scansion in our text on Pages 905-909. On Pages 910 and 911, you will find four (4) poems. At the bottom of Page 911, you will find the names for the meter of each poem.
Response Question: For each of the poems on Pages 910 and 911, briefly state why each poem is given the meter identified on the bottom of Page 911. For example, There was a young girl from St.Paul is identified as being “anapestic trimeter” because it has two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed one (anapest) and its lines are divided into three poetic feet (trimeter).
Pick one line from each of the poems on Pages 910 and 911. Copy out the line. On the line below it, show the scansion. Like this:
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
Note that the slash ( / ) mark is used for the accented (stressed) syllable, and the underscore ( _ ) is used for the unstressed syllable.
