Lao Tzu has an optimistic, almost idealistic perception of “thepeople”. His proposed attitude for the ruler to have toward citizensresembles that of parents toward a child. They treat the child with loveand care. At the same time, they let go of restrictions and rules, sothat the child learns from their own mistakes and grows up to beself-reliant. In the same way, this is how the ruler should treat thepeople of his nation. The upbringing of children can be compared to wayof governing people.
As for Machiavelli, monarchy is a type of political system in whichauthority is represented in a single person who exercises supreme power.Strictly, Machiavelli says that “bad” people need a strict ruler, whowould be feared. As a matter of fact, “it is better to be feared thanloved”, because love is temporal, while fear is constant. Therefore, hiskingship seems more like an autocracy or even dictatorship. Dictatorsgain despotic power, which they keep maintaining it by usingintimidation and oppression against their people.
