A summary is a genre of writing that explains or tells what a long text (or video or movie) is about. A summary is short. It does not give all the details of the original text. It only tells the main idea. For ESL 115, each summary you write is only eight or nine sentences.
The purpose of a summary is to introduce a story or an article to an audience who has not read it. The summary gives a general understanding of what the text is about. The summary does not give a lot of specific details.
When you explain what a text is about, think about the whole text. In general, there is a conflict and a resolution.
A conflict is the problem or issue that the text talks about.
The resolution is the solution to the problem.
