GMU Childhood Studies My Journey with Papa Children Book Analysis Essay

GMU Childhood Studies My Journey with Papa Children Book Analysis Essay

Question Description

This assignment is for a childhood studies class.

Write a one to one and a half page essay analyzing the five children’s books attached below (one essay per book), linking aspects of the books to concepts covered in the course. The essays should include: summary of each book, the age-range for whom you feel the book is most appropriate, a list of potential learning objectives associated with the book, how you could engage a child of the recommended age in a joint book-reading session, and a list of suggested activities that could extend the learning objectives of the book. In each essay, pay attention to the text as well as the illustrations, especially as they relate to cultural characteristics of the story characters or embedded in the story line. If necessary, you can access a guide sheet from your local public library to help you in the effort to determine the age-range for which the books are recommended but not required.

Hints about how to approach the assignment:

• Summarize the children’s book- What is the theme, story, take-away message?

•All the books convey real events-Does the book stay true to the story?

•Is the story told in a way that a child could understand (i.e., Is the story appropriate? For what age?)

•From the perspective of a teacher, parent, or other human service professional, create a list of goals for how you could use the book toteach children about issues described in the book as well as other child-related skills, such as self-concept, self-regulation, empathy, cooperation, friendship, etc.

•Identify strategies that could you use to engage a child in a book-reading session (either individually or as part of a group-reading session)? Hint: Asking questions is one way to engage children during social interactions (see Vygotsky’s theory).

• Are there activities you could use to extend learning beyond the book (e.g., drawing, coloring, role-playing, pretend play, etc.), especially as they relate to the ecological environments described the textbook.

• Consider the words in the story as well as the illustrations (Story book drawings are usually colorful and detailed, and very young children may pay more attention to illustrations than words, especially if they are non-readers. Hint, Having children attend to the illustrations is a great way to engage children in book reading.
