I am not entirely sure I understand all of the components of a data dictionary just yet, but this was my best crack at laying it out.

CLASSMATE POST #3

The pituitary gland is located in the hypophyseal fossa of the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone. It is separated into two portions: the anterior pituitary and the posterior pituitary. The pituitary gland produces hormones for many different things, such as growth and reproduction. (Derrickson & Tortora, 2016)

One of the hormones released by the pituitary gland is the luteinizing hormone. This hormone is what triggers ovulation in females. During ovulation, a secondary oocyte is released by an ovary. The luteinizing hormone also triggers the formation of the corpus luteum, which is the structure formed after ovulation and also causes progesterone to be secreted by this corpus luteum. In males, the luteinizing hormone triggers the secretion of testosterone from the testes. (Derrickson & Tortora, 2016)

Too much luteinizing hormone can cause infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, and inappropriate testosterone levels in women. Too little can cause low sperm count in men and an inability to ovulate in women. (Luteinizing hormone, 2020)

The nervous system and endocrine system are linked by the hypothalamus. These systems work in conjunction to control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, fluid balance, appetite, body weight, and sleep cycles. (Sargis, 2020)

CLASSMATE POST #4

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shape gland that is located in the lower front part of your neck. It is below the adam’s apple but in front of the windpipe. On the sides of it are lobes that are connected by the isthmus. It is although very small and cannot be felt when it is its normal size according to (Matthew Hoffman, MH 2014).

Within the thyroid several hormones are produced. One of them being the thyroxine also known as T4. This hormone plays a huge role and has many purposes. It is secreted into the blood stream and sent to important organs like the liver and kidneys and turned into triiodothyronine (Hormone Health Network, 2018). Once it is in the blood stream and organs it helps to stimulate the metabolic rate, and control how fast the oxygen and food release energy for our bodies. It also plays an important role in our growth and development within our bodies. It can also help control temperature and is very important during infant years and childhood to help with brain development.

Hyposecretion of thyroxine can result in hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is what happens when not enough of the thyroxine hormone and triiodothyronine hormone are produced. This can cause several things to happen to your body including mental and physical sluggishness, and the bodys level of functioning slows. Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism can cause tiredness and loss of energy, hoarse voice, weight gain, constipation and many other symptoms. Generally these symptoms start out slow and progress over time. There are two general causes of hypothyroidism. The first one being Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disorder which causes your immune system to attack itself. The second one is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which is inflammation of the thyroid gland. To diagnose someone with hypothyroidism they would need to consult with there doctor and the doctor will run blood test and get you started on a thyroid pill that you will most likely always have to take (UCLA Health).

Not only is the endocrine system important but so is the muscular system. These two work together to maintain homeostasis by maintaining temperature. The endocrine system sends signals through the nervous system which lets the muscular system know that the person is cold and to shiver or that they are hot to sweat. The three systems work closely together to maintain temperature homeostasis.
