Introduction to the Activity
The following videos show an experiment on the effect of prejudice in a very unique way. Even though the creator of the exercise was not a psychologist, many aspects of her experimentation can be applied to prejudice and discrimination psychological principles.
Instructions for PSY 360 Students and MLS 560 Learners
After reading Chapter 9, watch the following videos:
(Links to an external site.)Jane Elliott is still conducting her experiments today, but mostly with adult subjects, and she is now utilizing other manipulations.
Answer the following questions:
- Describe at least two concepts or theories about prejudice that Jane Elliott utilizes. Justify how you think these concepts are being used with her technique.
- What was your overall opinion of Ms. Elliotts methods?
- Do you think she is successfully reducing prejudice in the most effective manner? Why or why not?
- In your discussion, please include a personal example of an experience with prejudice and whether you think this method (or another) could have been used to change attitudes.
