Social Psychology in Action Assignment
Throughout the course, I have emphasized the everyday applicability of social psychology to real world events and experiences. Indeed, much social psychology research explicitly addresses issues in various applied domains. These are the focus of the last section of the e-book, called Social Psychology in Action. Your task for this assignment is to choose one of these chapterson applications of social psychology relating to either the environment, health, or lawand include the following:
- (a) Provide a brief summary of this area of applied social psychology (i.e., environment, health, or law). For example, what types of questions or problems does this area involve?; and (b) give one example from the textbook chapter that illustrates how a social psychological concept, theory, or phenomenon that weve talked about in the course (e.g., attitudes, attributions) is applied to this area.
- Locate 2 research articles in this area of applied social psychology that have been published in the last 10 years and that are not cited in the textbook, and, for each, summarize (a) the purpose of the study; and (b) the findings of the study. The best way to do this is to enter relevant search terms (e.g., identity and health) into the PsycINFO/PsycARTICLES database (http://www.smu.ca/academics/databases-a-z.html). You dont have to include the articles with your assignment. Instead, simply provide the references at the end of the paper, using APA format. For example:
Cameron, J.E. (2004). A three-factor model of social identity. Self and Identity, 3, 239-262.
- Describe a new hypothesis that you would be interested in testing in this area of applied social psychology. Would it involve experimental or correlational research? Explain why.
Suggested page length: Fewer than 4 double-spaced, typed pages. Try to be clear and concise.
