Question Description

I’m studying for my Writing class and don’t understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?

Option #1: Researching a Major Historical Event

For this Portfolio Project, you will analyze a major event, global or national, sociologically. You want to choose an event that has had major significance on a given society.

You can download and save the APA Template Paper as your paper and replace the placeholders with your information. This template is already formatted in APA style according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. Be sure your paper follows APA style according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA (Links to an external site.).

Your final paper must be 8-10 pages long. Cite at least six scholarly sources to support your assertions and strengthen your arguments, at least one of which is not provided in, or linked from, the course. The CSU-Global Library is a great place to find these sources. You may not use Wikipedia for any CSU-Global assignment. For this assignment, a credible source is defined as:

  • A scholarly or peer-reviewed journal article
  • A newspaper article
  • A government-based website or publication.

Refer to the Portfolio Project Rubric on the Course Information page for grading criteria. Please proofread your paper to ensure the sentences, paragraphs, and ideas flow well and are logical, concise, and grammatically error-free. A complete APA-style bibliography is required.

Topic: Hurricane Katrina

On Hurricane KatrinaThe event that I chose to use in this project is Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina is a historical event that had substantial social impacts on society, hence socially significant. The effect and aftermath of this disaster resulted in one of the most severe social and humanitarian crises in the history of America. Fundamentally, Hurricane Katrina is a tropical cyclone that hit the southeastern part of the United States on August 31st,2005. This natural disaster and its aftermath killed over 1800 people and are regarded as the costliest hurricanes in United States history. The calamityand failed response also highlighted the racial and socioeconomic inequalities in the region(Brunkard, Namulanda, & Ratard, 2008).

The media extensively covered the events of Hurricane Katrina. However, the media coverage also raised questions regarding the accurate representation of people and the relationship between race and media coverage. There was a lot of discrepancy regarding the language used by the media to address people of color and whites. For instance, in the beginning, the media used terms such as “refugees” to describe survivors but after a national outcry, they shifted and started using the term “evacuees” (Gabe, Falk, Mason, & McCarty, 2005). The media also used the term such as “looting” to describe blacks who were looking for food whereas white survivors looking for food were described that they were “finding food”. Therefore, analysis of the story angle shows a disproportionate media inclination to link African Americans with violence and crime, a tendency similar to exaggerated and incorrect reports about criminal activity in Katrina’s aftermath(Sommers, et al. 2006).
