I’m trying to study for my Psychology course and I need some help to understand this question.
In Chapter 2, you read in a short article entitled, “Cultural Diversity around the World: Why The Dead Need Money.” That article explained that traditional Chinese believe that the spirits of the dead continue an existence of some sort on Earth. In fact, they insist that the dead need “ghost” money in order to buy food, clothing, houses, luxuries, and entertainment in the spirit world. It is an obligation of the deceased person’s descendants to provide their departed loved one with “ghost money.” However, in recent times, the price of everyday and luxury items in the ghostly realm have increased dramatically. According to our textbook author, “Now the ghosts need hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. Sometimes they need a billion dollars. Inflation in the ghost world is so out of control that the stores now sell a trillion-dollar ghost bill” (Henslin, 2019, p. 38).
1. What is your reaction to this short article in your text?
2. Is your reaction an example of ethnocentrism or cultural relativism?
3. Explain how an ethnocentric person would view this story. How would a cultural relativist react to this story?
