Essay 1 – She Would Be King Analytical Essay (100 points)
For essay 1 you will be analyzing the novel She Would Be King written by Wayétu Moore. Your
focus should be on an analysis of the novel. While you are welcome to use some outside sources,
you are not required to do so, and the majority of your support should come directly from the
novel, by way of quotation, summary, and paraphrase.
Please choose ONE of the following options as the focus of your essay:
1. Explore the relationship between “super powers” and individual history. Choose one of
the three protagonists (Gbessa, June Dey, or Norman Aragon) as the focus of your essay.
How does your chosen character’s special abilities relate to their individual upbringing?
Do their abilities hold any type of symbolism when examining their culture/community?
Are their abilities related to their history?
2. Throughout the novel we are introduced to spirits that live in The Wind. These spirits
claim to be the ancestors of our protagonists. Analyze the importance of ancestry and
heritage in the novel. What is the novel suggesting about the importance of ancestry?
3. A trope that is seen very often in “superhero” stories is the conflict between insiders and
outsiders. We also see that much of the conflict in the novel has to do with this same
power dynamic: the way of life in the West African villages is threatened by American
settlers and French slavers alike, and Gbessa is branded as an outsider from the moment
of her birth. What does the novel have to say about suspicion or acceptance of outsiders?
4. Gbessa is set apart from June Dey and Norman Aragon in several ways, and some of
those have to do with the fact that Gbessa is a woman. What challenges do the female
characters face that the men in the book do not? What strengths do these characters have
that set them apart?
5. Another trope often seen in “superhero” stories is resistance. Some stories demonstrate
the resistance to tyranny, others resistance to societal norms, or resistance to cultural
appropriation. Discuss how the novel could be considered a resistance piece. What is the
novel responding to and working to resist?
Your purpose in this essay is to persuade readers that you have a valid argument. To accomplish
this, you will need a clear thesis supported by reasons and textual evidence from the novel. For
this essay, you will be working with simple thesis (you can review the Intro Paragraph
PowerPoint on Canvas): Thesis = Argument + Reason
