{The And} is an interactive documentary series developed and produced by The Skin Deep. Partners are provided a set of question cards, which are used to spark a conversation about some aspect of the relationship. Viewers are provided an opportunity to examine the dynamics of these relationships, all of which feature real people with real emotions. As such, this series is an appropriate channel for observing and analyzing real-life interpersonal communication in a variety of relationship types.

The purpose of this assignment is for you to analyze a relationship or conversation utilizing and incorporating interpersonal communication concepts and theories discussed in class.

Guidelines:

Select one video (minimum 8 minutes in length) to analyze that features a discussion regarding some aspect of relationships. Discussion topics range from falling in love to breaking up, coming out, sexual experience, etc., so you will have a wide variety of topics to choose from.

Analyze the communication regarding that relationship experience using at least one theory (e.g., Communication Privacy Management) or two related course concepts (topic avoidance and secret-keeping).

Incorporate at least 2 scholarly sources relevant to the theory or concepts and use them to frame your analysis. Note: you may use the textbook, but you should still find 2 scholarly sources and incorporate them into your paper.

Explain how the theory or concepts can be used to understand the interaction in the video or how the people in the video demonstrate the concepts in their communication. Include examples from the dialogue (e.g., direct quotations) as evidence to support your observations.

Include the following elements in your paper:

oIntroduction – identify video you selected with the link and the concepts or theory you will use to explain the interaction. In two sentences, provide a brief explanation of the video you selected.

oExplication of theory/concepts – define your theory or concepts in detail, and discuss the relevant literature by including your two scholarly sources

oVideo analysis – describe the interaction and relationship featured in the video and explain how the interaction demonstrates the concepts or theory. This section should include examples from the dialogue to illustrate the concepts or theory.

oEvaluation – Evaluate the conversation that took place. For example, did the individuals engage in effective communication? What things did each person do well? in what ways could they improve? Creativity is encouraged – what other things did you notice in the interaction? How might we use this interaction to better understand communication in similar relationships?
